"Pam and the Phoropter"

Eye exams this morning made for an excellent photo opportunity.
Been meaning to get a shot of one of these phoropters for years.
Saying this optical device is visual would be more than redundant...

Mountain Lion at Dusk

Caught a "grab shot" of this large mountain lion cutting thru our property just minutes ago.
Though sightings are very rare,
this is now the second time we have seen one just sauntering up our drive in the past few months...
An amazing animal, the male can grow to a weight of 275 pounds!
Their main diet is deer which luckily around here we have no shortage.
Experts estimate some four to seven thousand mountain lions reside in the state of Colorado.

Joe Beeler
Cowboy-Cowboy Artist

I was saddened to just today learn
Joe had passed on last April.

A pioneer in the field of Western art,
Joe was an incredible artist and sculptor.
He was one of the founding members of the
Cowboy Artists of America
and a resident of Arizona since 1960.

I had the good pleasure of meeting
and photographing Joe at his Sedona studio.

He had a great sense of humor...
Rather than just settling for the typical shot
of him shaking hands with some art council member,
Joe brought me into a side room off his studio,
he really wanted to show me his new boots!
I got the shot and sent him a copy...

Joe was in the saddle when he died.
He was working on a ranch with friends and neighbors,
branding calves...he slumped forward in the saddle
and died of a heart attack on April 26th, 2006.
Joe was 74...

"Caught in the Act"
by
Joe Beeler, founding member Cowboy Artists of America

First Arizona sun reveals this guy sneaking a quick bite before ranch duties.
Joe produced this print thru Northland Press on the occasion of the visit of the
Western Art Associates and the Men's Art Council, April 19th, 1975.
Joe signed one of these limited edition prints for me (#62/100) the day I met him at his studio in Sedona.
Over the past 32 years. Caught in the Act has always enjoyed a predominate spot on one of my main walls...

"Bear Creek...thru the looking glass"

A good friend of mine who works for Canon (lenses) sent me this most incredible piece of glass last week.
It's a 4.5lb. front element normally found in a $130,000.00, 72X, "box" lens.
These giant lenses are used by the networks for major sporting event coverage. Baseball, Golf, etc.
This is "kid in the candy store" shit for me so today we had to go out for some optical field testing...
