Polyphemus Moth ( Antheraea polyphemus )
Identification: This is another very large moth, belonging to the same family as the Ceanothus moth. It can be distinguished by its pattern. It has a large round eyespot in the middle of each wing. The large eyespots on the hind wings are gray with yellow lemon shapes in them. If one looks closely, the eyespots contain cells that are transparent.
Location: This moth is found in deciduous forests, wetlands, orchards, and on the wall under our outside light.
Notes: This is another large, beautiful moth found on the ranch so far this late spring. It tends to rest with its wings held above it, but a gentle breath causes the wings to spread offering a pretty cool shot grab shot using my Ipad-3 and a "mirror" photo application...
