Cameron, Arizona
Navajo Reservation

In 1911, a modest suspension bridge was constructed by the Midland Steel Company across the Little Colorado River Gorge at a lonely outpost on the Navajo Indian Reservation called Cameron.  The bridge was authorized by Congress to be built in 1909 at a cost of $15,000.  Tolls were collected to pay for the bridge.  After the U.S. Treasury collected these tolls in the amount of the cost of the bridge it was deeded to the county. In 1915, local traders Hubert and C.D. Richardson opened the Cameron Trading Post, and Cameron soon established itself as integral commerce center for the Navajo and Hopi tribes.
The bridge is now closed other than for a gas transmission line. The trading post remains, I would suggest trying the Navajo Taco…

The Red Sea
October 1992

On assignment for CBS News during Iraqi blockade.
I spent 12 days onboard a USN Frigate (USS Boone) steaming the Red Sea.
Shot at dawn and just before an early helicopter, (ships deck) lift-off, a very tired photographer prepares for another days adventure with the US Navy’s “Raiders of the Red Sea”.

"Ring of Fire" Annular Eclipse
Ocean Beach, California
January 4th, 1992

Pam and I headed west from Dallas for this event. I traveled with my Betacam and gear from work knowing we would be at a center-line position for this spectacular show. I recorded two 20 minute video tapes of the eclipse.
The above image is a capture from that tape.

The following was a short blurb in the LA Times that morning;
Southern California
will be treated to its second solar eclipse in six months today when the sun slides down behind the moon just before sunset. This will be an annular eclipse-quite different from the partial eclipse last July 11-because the moon will cover only the center of the sun, creating a "ring of fire” over the Pacific Ocean. The annular eclipse will be visible from Malibu to Ensenada, but the sun will be so low on the horizon that only those with a clear view to the west will see it.
In this eclipse, called an annular eclipse, the moon will cover the center of the sun, creating a "ring of fire" on the horizon. Bluffs and high points in South County offer the best vantage point over Catalina Island and longer viewing of the ring. The initial phase of the eclipse as the moon begins to pass in front of the sun will begin at 3:33 p.m., but its most striking phase will last only about five minutes beginning at 4:50 p.m. until the sun disappears behind the island.
